How To Eat Well and Surf-Travel
So I’m only about a week in to the big trip to Australia. I’m currently staying with a friend and his family in Sydney, and have the luxury of a great house to stay in and a fully stocked kitchen….. which I’m hugely grateful for.
But with all the traveling, hostels, crappy kitchens, and lack of refrigeration, how should someone keep up with some decent eating? It’s a damn good question, and one that I’m trying to work on.
Surf Food
With this trip in Oz, I plan to be in the water as much as possible. And to keep my body and health in a state that will allow me to do just that.
I’ve got to keep up with some good nutrition, and provide the nutrients and fuel my body needs, while being limited due to lack of storage, inefficient kitchens, and the need to travel light.
As with any decent nutrition programs, you’ve still got to focus on real foods- meats, veggies, fruits, fats, and pretty limited grains (in my opinion). Check out this post on Surf Nutrition Basics.
The specific meals really just have to be tailored to what kitchen equipment is available, if you can refrigerate leftovers, or have the ability to stock up on some groceries and make some more ingredient intensive meals.
Some food items that I find necessary and don’t require a fridge:
1 Good Knife – hostel kitchen knives suck
Celtic Sea Salt
Spice Container – I have a mix of cumin, pepper, coriander, cayenne, and red pepper flakes.
Coconut Oil
Coconut Milk- canned
Garlic
Fruits – fresh!
Veggies – whatever you can find fresh and local
Canned Fish – try to find some that is NOT in soybean oil
Nuts – preferably Raw and unsalted
With those things alone, you could mix up some decent meals that wouldn’t even require cooking. But if you’ve got a stove available, and a frying pan, then get cooking.
Last night I whipped up a basic stir fry with sausage, mushrooms, spinach, bell peppers (capsicum here in Oz), and garlic…Simple, easy, and nutritious. If you’ve got a fridge, then keep some leftovers for breakfast.
Here’s what I cooked up for lunch today…. chicken breast, broccoli, squash, with some salt, pepper, red chili flakes, and curry powder.
The premise of easy travel cooking- buy a meat, some veggies (starchy veggies too to get some good carb fuel), use a fat (coconut oil or olive oil), and throw in some spices…………… you’re only limited by your imagination and your taste buds.
Fridge????
If you’ve got a fridge available, then you’re set. Eggs, organic plain yogurt, organic milk, high quality meat, and maybe some good orange juice are the main things on my list to stock up on.
With that stuff alone, you can whip up all sorts of decent meals. And with a few extra bucks of spices or hot sauce, it will all be damn good.
